Modern Kununurra, in the far eastern reaches, is an ideal base to start an
outback adventure. The famous Ord River, Lake Argyle and Bungle
Bungles are a must-see, but there’s so much more besides. Stop at famous
river fords like the Pentecost or Ivanhoe crossings, and drop a line while
enjoying a picturesque backdrop. Set off with a 4WD and a sense of adventure and
explore the gorges on Gibb River Road. Walk and climb over boulders to the lush,
shady El Questro Gorge. Camp under the stars or stay in a luxury resort with an
unforgettable view. Have your camera ready as you pass the Cockburn Ranges, which
change colour by the minute at sunset.
If unchartered wilderness is in your blood, it’s worth visiting the massive Drysdale
River National Park. There are no visitor facilities or marked trails but there’s a plethora
of rare and unusual plants and an abundance of animal life. This is estuarine crocodile
country so extreme care must be taken around all waterways. You’ll no doubt see plenty
of big crocs if you take a boat out onto the water, but if seeing a huge croc up-close is
what you’re after, drop into a crocodile farm to see some monsters.
Set deep in the outback, this vast region
is home to some of the greatest jewels in
the Kimberley crown
